Prop 72 Defeated by California Voters
(SACRAMENTO) - Jot Condie, President of the California Restaurant Association and co-chair of Californians Against Government Run Healthcare today said the following, reacting to voter rejection of Proposition 72, the $7 billion health tax on workers and businesses: "We are very grateful that California voters saw through the smokescreen of misleading Yes on 72 advertisements. The defeat of 72 will help California's economic recovery and protect jobs in our state. We are grateful to Governor Schwarzenegger and to our coalition of over 1,500 groups and individuals from every walk of life who worked very hard to defeat this terribly flawed measure. It is unfortunate that this battle had to be fought to begin with. The reason Prop 72 was on the ballot was because unions forced this job killer through the legislature with little public hearings or debate. With 72 off the table, now it is time for the legislature to work with the business community to reduce the cost of healthcare and enact measures to help businesses afford to offer coverage to more Californians."
Allan Zaremberg, President of the California Chamber of Commerce and co-chair of CAGRH said, "The issue in this campaign was not about whether we should do more to help cover the uninsured, the issue was the flawed and costly Prop 72 solution passed by the legislature. Proposals to increase healthcare access to the uninsured must not place California businesses at a competitive disadvantage to other states."
