Why Proposition 70 is a Threat to Working Families

The California Labor Federation, AFL-CIO, State Building and Construction Trades Council and California UNITE HERE! urge you to protect the rights of workers and vote NO on Proposition 70, which will appear on the November General Election ballot.

PROPOSITION 70:

ALLOWS FOR THE UNLIMITED EXPANSION OF CASINOS that are exempt from state and local laws. Casinos operated by Indian tribes are exempt from local and state building codes, zoning ordinances, health and welfare codes and state environmental laws. The state and local governments will not be able to impose any reasonable restrictions of any kind.

PROVIDES FOR NO LOCAL OR STATE REGULATION OF INDIAN CASINOS. Proposition 70 permits virtually no state oversight or regulation of casino gambling. When inevitable problems arise -- like workers' safety and workers' rights issues, health and patron issues, law enforcement, environmental problems or traffic congestion -- state and local officials will be powerless to get the casino operators to assume responsibility for these problems. State courts have no jurisdiction to resolve disputes involving tribal casinos.

COULD TRIGGER A MASSIVE EXPANSION OF CASINO GAMBLING. Proposition 70 paves the way for UNLIMITED casino gaming in major urban and suburban areas across California. Indian tribes don't need Proposition 70 to conduct legal gaming on their reservations. Federal law prescribes a process that permits the tribes to conduct lawful gambling activities, yet protects casino patrons, workers and neighboring businesses and residents. In fact, more than 60 California Indian tribes operate casinos.
